The Poets

It seems as if the poets
will never shut up. Now
they have begun to scream
off their balconies.

They all seem to have balconies.
It used to be you could pass them
on the street and never know.
Those days are gone now.

These days, it seems as if
nothing we do is boring. Everything
resonates with layers of meaning.

We are sick of meaning. We want
to watch our reality shows and eat
our potatoes in peace.

Damn these poets. For all of their talk,
they do not understand. There was a time

when we looked up to them, when we sang
their songs, read their words, loved them

and built statues to honour their passing.

Those days are gone now.

Now,

we praise

silence.

Damn these poets indeed! Where the hell's my balcony? I'd like to reverse "watch" and "eat" in the 4th stanza...

You'd like "watch our potatoes in peace"? Cool. Let it be known I used to be a fine mashed potatoes and gravy artist. On my plate I would sculpt the most lovely potato brides complete with long gravy trains...

potato sculpting, eh? perhaps you are not brenda schmidt at all but richard dreyfuss!!

& polly, i can't reverse those two words, because that would be exactly the thing that the narrator is complaining about, & would only work if i could do it ironically, which i can't do since the narrative voice is set up as anathema to such things as irony.
