Heart

Small appliance.

Balled fist, fingers going white,
bloody marks on your palm –
suckerpunch.

Meat on a plate,
spoiling.

Fussy dud.
To be disposed of.
Red/blue wires crossed.

House
on fire.

Rotten egg and the hand cupping it
and the arm pitching it.

Poke in the eye.

Jack in the box
with a bent lid. Its jaunty tune.

Fine print.

Boy in the closet
with a gun.

Bloody handful.

NICE. I didn't get this the first time I read it, but when I came back I paid attention to the title and went AHA, I totes get it now. Even when I didn't fully get it, it had a violent/bombish undertone, very visceral.

I jarred at "fussy dud", not sure why but those 2 words together looped me. The rest of that stanza is great. Wanted more with "poke in the eye". The rest are great, whether they're looser or tighter, nice variation of meataphor. <---freudian typo, keeping it. I heart this poem.

I read & reread but I'm still not really sure what I see. The jack-in-the-box doesn't fit anywhere for me.. the ending, very strong, visceral.
Wish I knew what I was missing!

this eludes me. I'm thick as a brick. but I like it. I love the 'small appliance'

I, too, kind of get this without explicitly getting it, if that makes sense. The only image that didn't provoke any associations for me was 'Poke in the eye." "small appliance" and "bloody handful" work well to bracket the piece.
