After the Rain

Earthworms surfaced, swimming on
Rich black soil through its forest of green blades,
Hermaphrodites looking for a mate.

Black birds strutting about
Choosing now not to fly, for a
Free meal of earthy delights.

Bird-dog, mine, commanding over
Her kingdom, making worms squirm under
And black birds glide upwards once again.

nice! I particularly like 'Hermaphrodites looking for a mate'!

I think I'd like something more descriptive than 'earthy delights' ..... earthy appies? earthy amuse-bouches?

love Bird-dog, mine
love the final stanza all together.

: )

...or, could "earthy delights" be changed to say something about the texture or appearance of the worms? their paleness contrasted with the blackbirds?

I liked the movement in the last stanza, the way the birds and worms have been on the same level but then one moves up and the other down.
