A Hug

Passing through the same room
on the way to some chore
some undone bit of work
waiting patiently for its turn
we bump past, cloth touching,
almost moving on,
but stop and swivel without thinking
into the arms of each other
old friends for decades still seeking
the scent behind our ears
below the hairline
right above the neck
burrowing into the collar
holding the flavor of the day
and the smelling faintly
what we must remember from
nursing as newborns
some sweetness that means
we are loved and will be safe
and never alone again.

just thought i'd check in as a former May Day alumni to say i'm enjoying the month so far and also to share a May Day success... a poem i did for the site last year ("the animals are moving") just won an honourable mention in the Winnipeg Writers' Collective contest, so just a reminder to get the stuff out there after the month is done!

Hi Myra. I really like the quietness of this poem. I particularly like: "still seeking
the scent behind our ears" and "burrowing into the collar
holding the flavor of the day"

I agree with Kerry about the quietness, and I enjoyed the way reading it felt like "cloth touching,/almost moving on".

Thanks, Kerry and Tracy. I guess you can tell when I'm writing as a sliver of a larger day, grabbing moments and images as my starter points. That hug caught me on my way to writing.

Good to see you again, Jonathan, and congratulations on the honourable mention!
