dogs of portugal

the dogs of portugal are too aloof
to sniff, fetch, lick fingers

they refuse to be called buddy,
won’t make eye contact,
have no interest
in our pockets and crotches

untethered and independent
they trot busily across cobbles
like doctors on call

so mature and serious i’m surprised,
every time i step in shit,
they haven’t picked up after themselves

the Strength of your words is wonderful. words like fetch...pockets and crotches...cobbles...on call...i step in shit. the title/subject itself, very strong. nice!

Hey Kerry,

Very interesting, especially after Bren's travel/love poem on dogs...

I like "pockets and crotches" for sound and sense, the roundness of "buddy."

My only suggestion would be to polish that last stanza a little more...there's something that isn't quite working for me. Maybe the lines are a bit too long? Maybe I need a 'that' before that last line...

I love the doctors on call.
again, you are taking me somewhere. any idea why the dogs are so aloof? are they wild or are they unused (e.g., as watchdogs?), they are obviously not spoiled pets or are they?!
