Spectacle

Among impossible occupations: thievery. Though my coat is large enough to conceal a woman held for ransom; palm could swallow the crown jewels. Eyes, always on me, hold me honest. Even a half-witted witness could pick me out, and from behind. No need to make up the wanted poster. No other man fits this description.

Of course, I don’t need to steal; wouldn’t, even if I could find a shadow large enough to slink into. I have money in my pocket and my only job is to stand up straight. Compared with men who break horses, break land, I’m already a shyster. But I envy the privacy of the burglar, silence of his work. I’d like to know stealth.

Eyes on me the way swarms fix on the rankest man. So thick, there’s no point in swatting. I’ve learned to let them crawl over my face, hold my gaze steady on the horizon, imagine my getaway.

I wake often, certain I see a figure bent over the bed, hear eyelashes brush key hole. Alone only when hunchbacked in the outhouse, I’ve come to relish the cloister of a long, hard shit.

Fabulous.

In 1st stanza, a thought, sub "hostage" for "woman" (the woman in the coat distracted me, heh, but maybe you want that suggestiveness)

also maybe "one" palm or, "could palm the crown jewels" etc?

the 2nd stanza could tighten slightly, to the terseness of the 3rd and 4th.

Great ending. As always, enjoying your themes. (it's like reading a serial book, installment by installment)

Thanks Kerry!

I did not see that ending coming. Great!

Also: reminds me of Caravaggio in Michael O.

I hate you and your good writing.

Now that I've got that out, the third stanza and the last sentence hit hardest for me.

I like the first sentence of the last stanza...I like it a lot. But I'm not sure if it works here. The last sentence just feels truer...

I also wonder if the first and second stanzas could be condensed slightly.

I really like this too. I agree with Ariel that the first sentence of the last stanza is fantastic, but this might not be the place for it. That said, there does need to be something between the final line and the rest of the poem.
