today I want to go to the body
of water and interview each drop
because I read a paper once
explaining how water
has a memory. what is
your last recollection
of this person
I will ask, placing a photograph
in a corked bottle
casting it on thirsty waves
who will lick at my feet
conversationally, unapologetically
the sun reflecting
on everything I've said

Love the premise... water has memory and could be interrogated re its part in someone's drowning. The title is great! I find this piece very evocative.
Instead of using lake, the use of "body of water" and the line break at "body" is a nice touch.
"to interview each drop" wonderful.
I have been trying for years to write about going to the river where my brother drowned to ask why?? Why you especially since I was very fond of that particular river so there is of course a sense of betrayal. I have not been successful yet but your poem makes me want to attempt this again. In the meantime I will post a piece that touches on this subject but it is more of an exploration of how the loss affected my mother. Thank you Andie you are truly inspiring me to write more again.
Yes, that first line break is very effective, and taking on the impossible task of interviewing each drop of water demonstrates your feeling for the person who drowned in a way that a simple statement wouldn't do.
