Monday

but I just saw her on Friday
we were supposed to hang out tonight

it has rained steady all day
a quiet constant of life
a slow greening

are you sure? I'm going over

he slides his cell back
in his pocket and wanders over
shoulders slumped uncertain

it was ---, he says
----- drowned at the lake

and my response is the same dazing logic:
but we just saw her. She was alive
two days ago. And. She shaved your head.
Remember?

So he heads out the door, because
he has to go over to her place.
She can't not be there.
They have plans.

Beautiful portrait of the denial stage of grief.

Sadly fresh and authentic.

I'm so sorry for your loss. How heartbreaking.

Monday is the most mundane of days; nothing life-altering is supposed to happen on a Monday. The short title is so effective, especially followed by the first line.

The last stanza is very powerful.

I can only agree with Angeline about the power of the poem, and add my sympathies.

Such a delicate exploration of the denial that comes with such a loss. Title is effective as has been mentioned. Mondays are to be mundane but not this one. Clearly this situation has been on your mind. Thankfully you have your poetry to turn to, to document the feelings that you and your child are experiencing. I hope this is bringing you some relief.

I am so sorry for your loss.
